Reynisfjara is a world-famous black sand beach located on the south coast of Iceland. It’s right next to the small fishing village named Vik. With its huge basalt rocks, big waves from the Atlantic ocean and unbelievably stunning panoramas, Reynisfjara is considered one of Iceland’s most beautiful black sand beaches.

Why is Reynisjara so popular ?
You can find Reynisfjara approximately 180 kilometers from Reykjavík. It is a very popular stop for those who set out to discover the beauty of the southern coast. It has black volcanic sand, big and dangerous waves, beautiful smooth pebbles, unique rock formations and overall because of the atmosphere it creates. Along the beach there is also the peculiar sea cave Hálsanefshellir and the Gardar cliff which is made up of dark basalt columns that remind everyone of something different.
From the beach you have a view of the Reynisdrangar rocks sticking out of the ocean. These interesting looking rock pillars are said to be petrified trolls that were caught outside at sunrise and frozen in time. But some are adamant that they are actually basalt columns that were once part of vast coastal cliffs that have remained standing while other parts have been eroded away by the ocean. Black sand and basalt cave
The black onyx sand on Reynisfjara beach was created by volcanic activity in Iceland. When lava hits the ocean it cools quickly and breaks into small fragments of basalt. These small fragments make up many of the black sand beaches around Iceland. Basalt columns are formed by rapid cooling. This type of lava has high concentrations of iron and magnesium, which help speed up the cooling process when exposed to air creating this unique geological phenomenon.
Despite the fact that many tourists go to the beach we really liked it and spent about 2-3 hours on it. You can take beautiful photos there, enjoy the magical atmosphere, observe huge waves and simply take a breath and enjoy your presence to the fullest in an amazing place.
Dangerous sneaker waves
The beach is also known for dangerously large waves that can take human lives. As you enter the beach you will find many warning signs telling you not to get too close to the waves. You never know which wave will be big enough to take you out into the ocean. These waves are incredibly strong and can easily sweep an adult into the ocean. There is an underground reef that has a very strong pulling effect on the waves. Once you get caught in the waves it is difficult to escape especially for a child. The water temperature is only a few degrees celsius so hypothermia can occur very quickly.
We advise people not to turn their backs on the waves under any circumstances! Over the past few years several people have died in the waves at Reynisfjara beach. Tourists decide they want to take selfies with the waves and stop paying attention to the waves. This could be life-threatening situation. We ask everyone to be very careful on this beach and do not take the warnings lightly!
