How to get to around

When coming to Jodhpur you will definitely want to stay around the Clock Tower (Ghanta Gar). It is a tourist hub and all main attractions are around. It is also where you will find many hotels. There are multiple ways how to reach Jodhpur – train, bus or airport.

The best way to get around Jodhpur is via tuktuk (or a taxi). We used Uber in Mumbai and it was very easy and hassle-free. Unfortunately, we didn’t have much luck using Uber in Jodhpur. It allowed us to select a drop-off point but we waited ages for a drives which was never assigned. At least you can check what the prices should be. From the train station we got a ride for around 100-150 INR. (1.15-1.75€).

Kankariya heritage rooftop

If you want affordable but also clean and reliable hotel we gotta recommend Kankariya heritage (booking.com). It is just a few minutes of walk from the Clock Tower but still in more calm and relaxed part of the city. It offers wonderful views on the fort or the lake. The rooms are spacious, clean and staff is just lovely. Their rooftop restaurant with live music in the evening is a must!

10 Top things to do in Jodhpur

1. Visit Clock Tower and markets

Price: free

Opening hours: 10am – 6pm

This is the busiest tourist area in this part of the city. The Clock Tower itself is in the middle of a square. It was built around 200 years ago  and it is quite impressive building. It is also possible to go up to the top of the tower. The entrance should be for free and it is open between 10am and 6pm. We didn’t go up there so we can’t comment on that. In the evenings the whole tower is lit up!

What is more interesting is the local market surrounding this clock tower. You will find many different types of products here. There are bags, pottery, many clothes, textiles and different kinds of souvenirs. Prices are also pretty good, especially if you bargain. There is many shops not only here, but also in surrounding side streets.

TIP: It is much more enjoyable to visit this place in the morning around 10am. At that time most of the shops are already open and it is quite calm. Later it keeps getting more and more crowded. We came here later in the afternoon and it was overwhelming. There was just way too many scooters and people. It was all noisy and smelly from the exhausts.

2. Wander around Gulab Sagar

This is a very nice and calm area in the city. Gulab Sagar is actually a lake. Or more accurate – 2 lakes split with a bridge. It is perfect for some relax. It’s close to clock tower but not busy at all. You can see the majestic Mehrangarh fort from here. The water in the lake is quite contaminated and can be smelly. But it is definitely a nice place to take a rest from all the chaos in the city.

3. Get lost in the "Blue City"

This is what caught our attention the most. Narrow streets lined up with blue houses. On google we found an area where the blue part of the city should be – Navchowkiya. After arriving there we only found narrow streets full of trash. The most beautiful streets were actually right under the fort. This was our favourite location in the “Blue City” (map). There is also a few guesthouses with cheap prices! It is a great place to stay.

4. Enjoy a cafe at Dylan's rooftop

We only found this place by accident. It is a bit out of sight in one of the side streets. Only a few minutes of walk from Clock Tower. This is the exact location of Dylan’s rooftop. It is amazing place to have an afternoon coffee or even some breakfast. It is definitely a bit more expensive then streetfood but definitely worth it! We came back a few times!

5. Kunj Bihari temple

Price: free

This temple is definitely not one of the most beautiful ones.  We went there anyway and it was quite interesting. You will probably not find Kunj Bihari in many Jodhpur travel guides. It is very close to Clock Tower. There is no entrance fee and no tourists either. Definitely worth a visit! And not too far from it there is another temple connected with a hotel. On your way here you might notice light purple stoupas sticking out amongst other buildings. It is called Nirvana home. Do not hesitate to walk up the stairs and check it out. The staff will welcome you warmly! This is where you can find Kunj Bihari temple (map) and this is the other hotel/temple (map)

6. Check out Jodhpur's stepwell

Price: free

This is probably one of the most visited places in Jodhpur. We met the highest number of white tourists here. It can get a bit crowded. If you plan to take some nice photos come earlier in the morning. The water here is very green and definitely not a place you want to swim in. It is full of fish, too. Be careful when walking up and down the stairs and DO NOT STEP on the green stairs. They are extremely slippery and it is easy to fall. Like one brave and stupid woman we saw there. She had a short refreshing bath in there.

7. Visit Mehrangarh fort

Price: 600 INR

Opening hours: 9am – 5pm

Well, to be honest we didn’t really enjoy this place that much. We are not history fans and we found it boring. There is a display of ancient weapons, jewellery and clothes. There are 3 intriguing rooms which were just wonderful. The entrance fee for foreign tourist is 600INR which is around 7.5€.

8. Try Flying fox zipline

If you want some adrenaline, you shoudl definitely try Flying fox zipline. It will take you 1.5h and you will do 6 zipline rides. It can be a lot of fun and it only costs around 22-25€. Check out their official website of Flying fox

9. Try some sweets at Janta sweet home

We only heard good things about this place. For some reason, we didn’t actually plan to go there. It is also a bit far from the Clock Tower. Anyway, we accidentally ended up here when we were looking for a good restaurant for lunch. We didn’t try any sweets, but we had really delicious food in the upstairs food corner! And it was pretty cheap, too! You can find Janta sweet home on the map here

10. Go on a camel safari

Jodhpur is actually located in Thar desert, also known as Great Indian desert. Many hotels and tourist companies offer different types of desert adventures. Whether you want to ride a camel or go on a crazy jeep ride, you will find it here. We didn’t do any of those here, but in Jaisalmer. We’re pretty sure it’s gonna be very similar though. You can book your camel safari here.

Where to eat in Jodhpur

In Jodhpur we found it a bit hard to find a good restaurant. Especially around Clock Tower. It is indeed full of shops and markets but none of them have food and there’s almost no choice. We decided to sum up some of the places we visited and really liked.

Janta Sweet Home

Janta Sweet Home was already mentioned earlier. In other tourist guides it is mentioned primarily because of sweets. There is a food corner upstairs, where they make really delicious food. You can get many different typical Indian and Rajasthani dishes here. You can find it HERE

Shahi Samosa

This a a streetfood. They mostly sell samosa here. You will see a smaller crowd of people standing around enjoying their delicious food. The oil in which it is made seems like it desperately needs to be changed and the hygiene seemed questionable. Many locals were eating here and we gave it a go, too. The food was delicious and we didn’t feel sick. That’s a win win! You will find it HERE

Om Juice center

The best place for juices! Not only locals but also many tourists come here everyday. In the corner there is also a small streetfood stall belonging to the same owner. Definitely a must go place! It is right HERE

Acharya guesthouse (rooftop)

Very lovely family run rooftop retaurant. You get the best views of the Mehrangarh fort and the city. And the food is soooo delicious! The whole family is really friendly and welcoming. They mixed up our order a but it was amaing anyway! This place is HERE

Sunshine guesthouse (rooftop)

We actually spent one night in this guesthouse. After check-out we spent whole day at their rooftop restaurant. Good breakfast, delicious lunch or dinner! The prices are fine and food is delicious. It is very cozy up on the roof. You can even get some Korean food here if you’d like. You can find it HERE
