Iceland
Overlooked by tourists many times. But Reykjanes peninsula also has a lot to offer. There are many hidden gems and the great thing is that there are not as many people here as in other places. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to go through it all, but we definitely want to come back here.

Best time to visit Iceland
june-august
october – april
It is difficult to describe the best time to visit Iceland. It depends on what you want to experience. If you want to see never-ending days and light almost 24/7, come in summer. Then the sun hardly sets here. You will often experience the so-called „golden hours“ – sunsets and sunrises. The conditions are also a bit friendlier, the weather more pleasant. But there are many tourists and prices are going up.
Iceland in winter is beautiful. You will come across incredible contrasts of white snow and black beaches. The landscape also looks like from a fairy tale. You have a unique opportunity to see the Northern Lights. However, it is really cold here in winter and the weather is unpredictable. Conditions are subject to change and snow storms can come any time of the day. So you have to take into account several restrictions. You can’t get to the Highlands in winter at all. But there are fewer people and the prices are lower.
Travel documents
If you have EU passport you do not need anything else to enter Iceland. You can even use your national ID. If you are not from EU, you can get your visa here.

Car rental
For us personally, the best way to discover Iceland is by car. However, bringin your own car from Europe is not that easy. The only way is this Smyril line ferry from Denmark. The cruise lasts 3 days and the minimum price for 2 adults, including a car up to 1.9m, is €353 one-way. Food is not included in the price. It might be easier to rent a car.
The most common rental companies are Avis, Hertz and Europcar. We found the best prices from Budget. If you are only going to do circuit around Iceland – the so-called Ring road or Golden Circle 4×4 is not necessary. You can get to most places without it. If you want to explore the Highlands without a 4×4 it’s impossible. All the places we mention (except the Öxi mountain pass) can be reached with a classic car.
